in a world where one in four people have the innate ability to create magic (and just about everybody has the skill to use magic), there is a coven named amyranth. while traditional methods of harnessing magical ability come through 'ambient' rituals (i.e., drawing power from natural, everyday tasks, such as using a spool to symbolically 'knit' spells into creation or using different oils to strengthen protective runes), the wayward coven of amyranth believes in one rule: knowledge is power, and power is infinite. the members of amyranth practice not only 'leeching' magics that drain whole towns dry and create earthquakes that fissure the earth, they also break one of the key elements of witchcraft: to never disrupt the balance of nature. each amyranth coven member is given, upon initiation, a coven name and the ability to shapeshift into an animal of their choosing with the understanding that they will serve without question. in exchange for this animal freedom, the members of amyranth work towards harvesting power — and, yes, leeching it from not only the soil but also other people. an irishman with no discernable magical lineage (nor personal history to speak of), eamonn seems to have come from nowhere and can disappear back into nowhere just as easily without so much as a moment's notice. like most of the world's population, eamonn is unable to create his own magic and instead relies on elaborate rite and ritual to hijack others' to make it his own. however unlike most other witches, eamonn's ability to leech power from another other entity does not destroy the entity entirely. rather, it exists in a weakened state, therefore allowing the power he feeds on to perpetuate and self-sustain. eamonn does this by marking his own skin with the name and rune of the person he wishes to siphon from; so long as his body continues to bare this mark, no other witch may take their power from them or destroy them by magical means. by the same token, their own magic is useless to them and can only be used by eamonn himself. in keeping with the coven's philosophies, eamonn is primarily a predatory creature, though he has been known to be kind to the wells he keeps while he keeps them. |
